Rotational Force
The game of baseball both from
general and sport specific perspectives requires developing the athlete’s rotational capacity.Building a hitter’s rotational range of
motion (ROM) and power will improve your overall
hitting performance as well as
other aspects of your game from basic agility skills and injury
prevention, to
the dominant throwing and hitting motions. The core muscles used during
these
movements include the abdominals, hips, and lower back. Functional
exercises
that include many planes of movement are essential to properly train
this area.
When you look at the swing or the pitching delivery, ithey both go
through a sequence of movements. During this sequence the core plays a
big role in stabilizing
the body so energy or force can pass up from the legs to the shoulder,
to the
arms and eventually to the bat. This is without a doubt one of the
areas that
has to be strong during the swing. If the extremities are strong and
the core
is weak, there will not be enough force generated in those extremities
to
produce explosive movement. A weak core is a fundamental cause of
inefficient
movement. It also makes it tough to have a good repeatable swing or
pitching
delivery if the core region is weak.

Baseball by most accounts isthought of as a fairly slow-paced type of game. To the novice or casual fan it
would be hard to argue otherwise with that assessment. But to those of us who
have played or coached the game of baseball, it is very explosive split-second
reactive type of game. The lead-up to a play can have a slow pace, but from the
time the baseball is delivered to the hitter there is minimal time for all this
explosive action to happen. By this definition baseball is an explosive game
and we must train explosively. Here is an example of that quick reaction time:
From the time a baseball leaves the pitcher’s hand and crosses the plate a
hitter has about 0.4 seconds to react. On average the physical act of swinging
the bat takes about 0.2 seconds. That is half of your time just to swing the
bat. The other 0.2 seconds is used to determine pitch, speed, height, and
whether or not you’re going to swing. Based upon those numbers, I would argue
whole-heartedly that the game of baseball is one of - if not the quickest -
games. As baseball athletes with these reaction times, you see the importance
of core strength. Again, the core is the center of all the energy and firing
patterns that are eventually passed out to the bat to hit the ball. It is
important to mimic the movements and postures of this rotational force in our
training, so keep the core strong.
